ROY G. BIV (pronounced like a person's name): Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet : the colors of the rainbow, in order. Thanks to TSpindler@rsmas.miami.edu! I have seen books that claim this is an acronym rather than a mnemonic, but I'm firmly convinced it's a mnemonic first!
Richard of York Gave Battle In Vain: I've received about 150 (or was it 250?) emails mentioning this as a mnemonic for the same concept (colors of the rainbow). Thanks, alla-y'all! And especially thanks to my brother, who was the zillionth-and-one emailer about it.
